The East African Community (EAC) is a customs union consisting of three countries namely Uganda,Kenya and Tanzania.Rwanda and Burundi which are neighboring countries will be joining the EAC in another few weeks to come.The two countries signed the agreements accepting all conditions plus joining the EA Customs Union in the presence of Kenya's Foreign Affairs PS Peter Nkuraiyia.

There will be a special meeting of the EA Ministers responsible for the regional integration in November where an official pronouncement will be made.

Once the two countries join the EAC this will see the population for the bloc shoot to 110 million compared to the current 80 Million.

Rwanda and Burundi had earlier applied to join the EAC but the applications were deferred because the founding partners were in the process of establishing the Customs Union,which came into force in January 2005.On being admitted Burundi and Rwanda will be free to use the East African Passports.

A simultaneous campaign for the East African Federation was launched on the 13/Oct/2006 by the three heads of state i.e. President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania ,President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.

This kicked off a campaign to sensitize the population in the three countries of the proposed federation a head of a referendum slated for 2010.The referendum will be held in each country and once the results signal an approval  then it can come into force by 2013.

Each country will remain with its President,Flag,Anthem,economy within the union and presidency for the federation will be on a rotational basis.This will see free movement of people and goods within the borders.
