Tanzania was today marking 50 years of independence where President Jakaya Kikwete noted that Tanzania Mainland formerly Tanzania had experienced rapid economic and social transformation as compared to the past years.

"The world knows that we cherish our independence and sovereignty. Nobody from outside will ever make a decision on our behalf. We always want to live in harmony with our neighbours and the internal community in general," said President Jakaya Kikwete.

Some of the dignitaries who graced the event were Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, the Prime Ministers of Rwanda and Swaziland and the Foreign Affairs Minister of UAE.

Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom sent a message congratulating the President of Tanzania saying the 50 years of Mainland Tanzania have been characterized by peace and stability, a rare thing to find in many parts of the world. "It gives me great pleasure in sending Your Excellency and the people of Tanzania my warmest congratulations on this very special occasion."
